Origins
Taekwondo was born out of ancient Korea. The modern form of Taekwondo was developed in the mid-20th century and is based on a combination of traditional Korean martial arts, Japanese Karate, and Chinese martial arts.
The name “Taekwondo” was officially adopted in 1955. The word itself can be broken down into “Tae” (meaning foot or to kick), “Kwon” (meaning fist or to punch), and “Do” (meaning way or art), representing the emphasis on both kicking and punching techniques in the martial art.
Taekwondo became popular not only as a self-defense system but also as a sport, and it is now practiced worldwide by millions of people of all ages and skill levels.

Discipline
The core of our TaeKwonDo in Kitchener and Waterloo is the discipline that people master. In TaeKwonDo, discipline refers to the self-control and commitment required to follow the rules, training routines, and codes of conduct set by the martial art. It is the backbone of a practitioner’s journey towards self-improvement and mastery.
In Taekwondo, students are taught to respect their instructors, fellow students, and the principles of the art. They learn to adhere to a structured training regimen, which includes mastering techniques, performing patterns (forms), and engaging in sparring sessions. Discipline also encompasses maintaining a positive attitude, showing perseverance in the face of challenges, and accepting both victories and defeats with humility.

Self-Defense
TaeKwonDo’s self-defense techniques are designed to be practical and efficient, allowing practitioners to defend themselves effectively. The taekwondo martial arts academy emphasis on powerful and high-impact kicks enables individuals to keep attackers at a distance, making it more challenging for them to approach.
