This Olympic sport TaeKwonDo program is not for the average joe. High-performance sparring follows traditional techniques and modern sports science principles to create well-rounded athletes who are ready for different kinds of competitions within Waterloo or even across the globe.
For serious athletes, the rules of the sport are more strictly implemented to promote safety and fairness in the arena. Thus, you can expect our instructors to be more rigid during the high sparring sessions to instill a sense of discipline in all our trainees.
Many parents are apprehensive about enrolling their kids in TaekwonDo because of the impression that it will only teach them violence. However, students and teachers of the craft know that it is the complete opposite. In this sport, we follow the “five tenets of TaekwonDo”, which are the following:

High-performance sparring is using taekwondo as a contact sport. You face an opponent one-on-one and have the ability to use any taekwondo movements in order to defeat your opponent. High-performance sparring is called Kyorugi. There are other kinds of sparring involving rehearsed movements, however, this type of sparring is usually not favored by those who are interested in taekwondo competition.
Any of the movements or poomsae that you learn in taekwondo may be applied to your high-performance sparring. That includes kicks and punches. Those who compete in high-performance sparring wear protective equipment on their head and chest to prevent being seriously injured. However, there’s always some element of risk in any form of sparring.
When you practice taekwondo you may also want to study modern sports science in order to further your efforts. Modern sports science relies on the sciences of physiology, anatomy, psychology, biomechanics, biochemistry, and much more in order to understand how athletes can best prepare for and recover from the sport they are participating in.
High-performance sparring is a highly demanding practice that requires you improve your overall level of physical fitness and health. Students who are serious about becoming athletes in the world of taekwondo sparring will need to follow a conditioning program, which was created by our world-class athletes for their improvement.
High-performance sparring begins with taekwondo fundamentals that you learn in typical classes. The movements are the same, but in the free-form of the spar you need to decide when to use different movements. During training for high-performance sparring, we teach the rules of competition and how to improve at it.
That depends on what you value. High-performance sparring might be the end goal of your taekwondo practice, it may be the kind of competition that you’re here for. On the other hand, there are people who enjoy taekwondo and pursue it for years without ever competing, especially not in Olympic taekwondo rules.
High-performance sparring is a demanding practice, and it’ll take time to learn. How difficult you find it will depend on your overall level of physical fitness, your natural ability in taekwondo, and how motivated you are. We can help meter the challenge of high-performance sparring so that you make progress.
Very young children can, obviously, not do high-performance sparring. Once you or your child are physically grown enough to handle a contact sport, they can then learn and compete in high-performance sparring. Older adults can all learn high-performance sparring at any age, barring a physical condition or concerns from their doctor.
High-performance sparring is good for your physical and mental health. We encourage our students to condition their bodies with strength, endurance, flexibility, and other skills. High-performance sparring will also help you gain courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit, and more.
5 Rings Taekwondo offers high-performance sparring classes in Kitchener, and those who live in Waterloo will find it convenient to attend as well. We have a highly experienced team, led by our founder who is a national-level team coach and a 6th dan black belt. He has produced 60 national champions.
