We offer taekwondo for children as young as 3. Children this young are still old enough to learn the basic movements involved in taekwondo. They will not be able to compete seriously until they are older. However, you can start learning taekwondo at any age, including in your senior years!
Taekwondo is a great activity for children and it offers them many benefits. Taekwondo provides children the opportunity to develop all kinds of physical skills, including balance, strength, endurance, agility, and more. Plus, kids will learn essential interpersonal skills and develop emotionally and mentally from practicing and competing in taekwondo.
There are many benefits of taekwondo, but it depends on the specific child and what efforts they put into it. For children who have too much energy and need discipline, taekwondo can give them an outlet and help them learn control. For shy children, taekwondo can instill confidence and help them step out of their shell.
There are a few movements not allowed in taekwondo, including using your knee or head to attack, punching to the face, or punching below the waist. Your instructor will make clear the rules for engaging in taekwondo during your lessons. There are also different international bodies that may have slightly different rules for taekwondo.
There is no specific motto for taekwondo, but there are five tenets of taekwondo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. You’ll learn more about the tenets of taekwondo and how they apply to it during your classes.
The taekwondo uniform is based on traditional Korean clothing called a hahn-bogh. Taekwondo itself is Korean. The term “gi” does not apply to the taekwondo uniform. In judo and karate, the uniform is called a keikogi or a dogi. The taekwondo uniform consists of a jacket, belt, and a pair of pants. You get a belt in a new colour as you advance through the ranks of taekwondo.
Your child can learn taekwondo when you bring them to taekwondo classes at a dojo. We offer classes for children starting at age 3.
We think so! Of course, karate is an interesting martial art that has several advantages, but we prefer taekwondo for many reasons. It focuses more on the lower body and teaches kicks and jumps that a lot of people enjoy. There is also a strong competitive community for taekwondo in our area.
Everyone needs some level of discipline in order to accomplish what they would like to with their day. Taekwondo teaches a mindfulness and focus that helps you remain disciplined. It can also teach children the value of discipline, as hard work is strongly rewarded, as opposed to slacking off, which is not.
